Home Based Business: Management Issues
Irrespective of the size and nature of a business organization, the fundamental principle that rules the management of any kind of business remains the same.
There are some very basic aspects of a business that need to be taken care of, no matter how large or how small the organization is. Home businesses are particularly tricky. Though the adherence to certain basic principles is mandatory, they have to be taken special care of because of the special nature of their orientation.
The following is a comprehensive guide to the effective management of a home business. The management functions are three fold:
1. Understanding the nature of the home business – it is specifically important for such kinds of business to focus on both the micro as well as the macro picture. Most businessmen engage in devoting a considerable amount of their precious time and effort in trying to develop a new product without considering how that product can be moved, or whether at all it has a good market in the parts the business wishes to operate in. though any business must be essentially backed by a new product, it is equally important that the big picture be kept in mind, and related research conducted.
2. Understanding the nature of the goals that the business aims at achieving – this, one would believe, is the most important part, for this is the sphere where the execution skills of the home businessman will be taken into account.
A home business works on the assumption that the businessman handles most of the functions alone. This means that he alone is the boss as well as the employee. In other larger businesses, the boss sets tasks and deadlines for his employees, which the employees try to meet on time.
In case of home businesses, however, since there is no one supervising the work of the owner, there may be a tendency to put work off, which may result in major losses at the end of the year. The thumb rule is never to put off today’s work for tomorrow.
Set reasonable and realistic goals for yourself, so that they can be met with, and make it a point not to pile up work for later. Goals can be made manageable by dividing them in time frames – short term, middle term and long term goals. This just puts things in a better perspective and also gives the businessman a rough idea about how much time he has for the accomplishment of the goals.
It also helps to prioritize better the functions to be performed by the business.
3. Determining the kind of hard work and efficiency that would be required – one thing need to be determined clearly. How much of your home life will you be willing to let creep in your working hours at home. This has to be clearly decided and adhered to. Apart from that, no household activity must be performed during those hours. Make a schedule and stick to it, and refrain from getting distracted by personal telephone calls and mails.
